Spotlight at Higher Education Center

Two of our team members, Kim Novak and Chris DeEulis, were selected to present in the Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Drug Misuse Prevention & Recovery’s Partners in Prevention Learning Collaborative.

Their program, Effective Collaboration Utilizing the Social Ecological Model in Fraternity and Sorority Life AOD Prevention Efforts, discuss applications of Collective Impact theory and the Social Ecological Model in broad-based prevention strategies for fraternity and sorority communities. Fraternities and sororities provide abundant examples of opportunities for exploration and are used to give participants tangible structures to analyze. The focus is on the partnership between campus professionals, students, and inter/national organizations.

A recording of the session is available through the Center’s Scarlet Course program.

Educator of the Year Selected

Our Team is excited to announce our 2020-2021 Educator of the Year!

Each year we select a K-12 teacher to support with a gift of $250.00 to supplement their classroom expenses. This initiative was started because NovakTalks recognizes the importance of k-12 education in the preparation of the people we work with as collegians.

This year's educator of the year is Nancy Rosenbaum, a 5th grade teacher at Florida State University School. She is a science teacher with a passion for hands-on learning. Her nominator shared: "Mrs. Rosenbaum creates a class environment that allows students to share and make mistakes without fear of being made fun of. She is a true
educator with a remarkable ability to relate to and teach children the wonders of science."

Nancy shared:
"Due to COVID-19, I will be teaching in-person and virtually this school year. The funds being awarded to me will be instrumental in purchasing resources that will assist me in teaching 5th-grade science that is engaging and rigorous. They will provide me the opportunity to purchase individual supplies for inquiry-based learning, including materials that I can send home to students who are distance learning. "

We are honored to support Nancy and her classroom!

A Call to Action!

Our Founder & CEO, Kim Novak, is still leading the industry as we address hazing on college campuses. Kim is honored to be secured by The National Center for Campus Public Security to provide a webinar, "Hazing Prevention: A Call to Action."

"Join us for a research driven look at what colleges and universities should be focusing on when trying to eradicate hazing from their communities. Using data from several research sources and theory from the recent literature on hazing, Kim will walk participants through a process of understanding what the data is really telling us about hazing behaviors. Identifying opportunities for intervention and enhancing response approaches to hazing incidents will be discussed as will the critical action of shifting to preventing hazing before another tragedy befalls a student, family, and campus community."
